I 1984 besteg bjergbestigeren Zoltán Demján to 8000 meter bjerge uden brug af kunstig ilt. Først besteg han sydsiden af Lhotse Shar og derefter den sydlige pilar af Mount Everest. Vejret gjorde dog hans nedstigning til et ægte drama, men dette er intet i forhold til hans første bestigning af Dhaulagiri i alpinistisk stil. På den lodrette sydvestlige højderyg venter ham ikke kun en meget vanskelig klatring, men også en vigtig lektie, som vil ændre hans liv.
